Hm. You know I don't agree with your blanket generalization of literary fiction, but there is something to the idea that if nothing happens, it's boring. On the other hand, I generally like the buildup of the story the most and am disappointed by the climax. Horror movies are the first example that come to mind (what do you expect?). I like the little bits of character creation, the slow building of the story—that's where all the creativity is. And then when you hit the climax it's all shrill and flailing—and completely expected. I often wish books and movies would just stop 3/4 of the way through and let me imagine the rest.
